Halloween in France

The Haunted House in Azille

Halloween - "all Hallows' Eve" - the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain on the night of October 31, comes to life each year in the Minervois !

From my first year in Azille, in the South of France, when I hid behind the curtains from the trick-or-treaters who I never imagined would come to my door in this small French village, Halloween has never been the same at La Dolce Vita.

Each year just gets better and better, from my costumes to decor of the house, and finally we are in the 3rd year of turning La Dolce Vita into a Haunted House to share with the locals and beyond...

Megalithic Stones in the South of France

Not only will you find Cathar history & ruins all over the South of France, but the Romans left their mark with the occasional pillar, as well as the Dinosaurs & cavemen.  Nearby Azille and not far from Carcassonne or Narbonne you will find a 5000 yr old Megalithic burial site built by a tribe called the "Veraza" in approximately 3,500 b.c.

The Dolmen de Fados, or the Fairies' Hillhock, sits in the community of Pepieux between Cesseras & Siran on a wooded hill, smack dab in the middle of the Minervois vineyards.

A tomb with a 25 meter long passage that was originally 2 and a half meters high, sits within a hidden 35 meter long burial mound.

With an entrance at each end the main chamber is covered with a 25 ton 'capstone' made out of locally sourced limestone - how the builders got it there is still a mystery today.

The remaining pillars & stones have been carved from the surrounding sandstone, impressive work as well, and one of the largest Megalithic sites in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

The Making of La Dolce Vita in Azille

This is the story of an amazing, centuries old village house in the South of France, La Dolce Vita.  Lost in the middle of the Languedoc vineyards, Azille is the home to many of these structures built like labyrinthes and often connecting together via secret passageways and hidden doors.  This was the same with our special home, dating back to at least 1816, with several nooks and crannies awaiting your discovery.

When the interior was started great care was taken in order to find the feeling of the rooms and the now shared spaces we offer you - decorating each room with it's own theme, while using original tiles, refurbishing old beams & working with all the odd shapes found in the spaces.

Serenity in Azille in the Minervois

Azille, a small village in the Minervois wine region in the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon, rests in amongst the vineyards in the South of France.

How often do you see full rainbows while relaxing on your rooftop terrace?  Well, here in this serene village, you'll come upon many colorful light arcs sparkling in the distance, activating your sense of wonder and awe...

Finding your way to Azille may not be easy, however when you arrive in this hidden sanctuary, seemingly lost  in time, you'll feel the calm wash over you.

Strolling through the narrow streets will be first on your agenda and you may never see anyone other than a lounging cat high above...

...and the only noise...the squeaking of an old bicycle descending a path somewhere nearby.

At some point during your stay in this ancient town, the wonderess that you are, will take you down into the vineyards so that you can view Azille from below, while looking up at her beauty'll take your time as you watch the branches sway in the breeze & a smile will appear.

You'll feel the calm, the reason most of the original inhabitants never leave...

Being the center of the universe, Azille can take you in any direction for the day to find your pleasure in this still innocent region, a day of self-discovery that you create and for only you to enjoy.  And at the end of that day...return to the welcoming arms of the village and enjoy the evening, sipping the local Minervois wine...gazing over the rooftops of times past...searching...
